Our Vision
The Department of Geography is committed to the advancement and dissemination of "spatial thinking" to citizens of New Mexico and beyond. Our vision is to be regionally and nationally recognized for excellence in research and teaching in our two areas of concentration: Environmental Management and Geographic Information Science. Understanding how our natural environment is managed and mismanaged is a key element in our program. GI Science is a key tool for understanding the natural world and includes: Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems, Spatial Statistics, and GPS.
Achieving excellence in teaching, research, and service.
Our students are at the heart of our program. Students in our program achieve excellence in geographic literacy through critical spatial thinking, the effective communication of spatial knowledge, and success in achieving programmatic outcomes goals. For faculty, excellence means improving the Department's recognition and reputation amongst Departments of Geography in the region and nationally. Faculty members are committed to maintaining a high level of research and teaching. For staff, excellence means providing assistance to faculty, students, and the University in ways that keep the Department functioning and help build the departmental community.
Contributing to the University of New Mexico's Mission
The Department is committed to being an integral part of and an active contributor to the mission of the University of New Mexico. We provide leadership in GI Science and environmental management at UNM. The intellectual roots of GI Science are in Geography, and we are taking a leadership role in developing it on campus. The Department also has taken on the responsibility of serving the broader campus community in this area.
Building an Intellectual and Academic Community
A vigorous and vital academic climate within Geography is established by building a sense of community. This community consists of both scholars and learners and includes department faculty members, students, and members of the community at large.
Fostering Sustainability
A key value in environmental management is sustainability. Managing the resources we possess and the natural environment has long been a part of geography. Environmental management is one of the primary concentrations of the Department, making sustainability an inherent part of our program, and members of our faculty are affiliated with UNM's sustainability studies program.
