Busy Week at GES

Dr. Chris Lippitt and SAGES volunteered to participate in this year’s National Geographic Society’s New Mexico Geographic Bee on April 6, 2018. Chris had the distinct honor of moderating one of the subgroups of twelve children between fourth and eighth grade. The event was held at the National Dance Institute in the Historic Hiland Theater, just east of Nob Hill. It was a great opportunity to increase visibility of the GES department in the community and support the education of a new generation of budding young geographers.

The Atrisco Heritage Academy High School in Albuquerque’s South Valley hosted a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Day on April 12, 2018. GES was represented by Dr. Chris Duvall and SAGES. Other university departments, nonprofits, and local, state, and federal agencies all demonstrated the numerous opportunities in STEM to a few hundred interested students. The clear highlight was watching students of Jordy Hicks’ (a GES alum) environmental science class listen with rapt attention as Chris explained physical geography and the cascading causes and effects of New Mexico’s powerful wind storms.
