Christian Umholtz selected as the sole recipient of the 2025 AAG Darrel Hess Community College Scholarship

Darrel Hess Award

The Department of Geography & Environmental Studies congratulates Christian Umholtz, a Geography undergraduate student at UNM, on being selected as the sole recipient of the 2025 AAG Darrel Hess Community College Scholarship. This award recognizes students transferring from a two-year institution to a four-year institution with the intention of pursuing Geography as a major. This award, along with support from the UNM GES department, supported his travel to the AAG conference in Detroit this year.

William E. Fogleman Memorial Scholarship

Fogleman Scholarship Recipients 2025

The William E. Fogleman Memorial Scholarship was made possible through a generous gift to the UNM Foundation. This scholarship was created by family and friends of the late William “Bill” Fogleman, who was internationally known for his work in GIScience. GES is fortunate to receive this gift, which will benefit generations of budding GIScientists.

This scholarship support the academic and professional development of promising undergraduate students who wish to pursue a career in Geographic Information Science (GIScience). It is specifically meant to enable undergraduates to travel to conferences or other professional opportunities. Snead Scholarships

The Rodman E- Snead Scholarship fund celebrates the legacy of Professor Rodman Snead, who taught in our department during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Snead Scholarship are offered on an annual basis to support student travel to academic conferences. Graduate and undergraduate students currently enrolled in any program within the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at UNM may apply. Contact Graduate Program Director, Professor Maria Lane, for more information.

Graduate students currently enrolled in the M.S. or Ph.D. program within the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (GES) at UNM may apply. Past recipients of the Snead Scholarship are eligible to apply in subsequent academic years.

The maximum award is $500 per academic year for travel to conferences where the student is presenting their research.
