Dr. Suárez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of New Mexico. Her teaching and research focus on Geographic Information Science (GIScience), cartography, and geovisualization.
Dr. Suárez earned her Ph.D. in Geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before joining UNM, she was an assistant teaching professor in the geography department and online geospatial education programs at Penn State University. Prior to her academic career, Suárez worked as a consultant for the United Nations Development Programme on Adaptation to Climate Change in the Colombian Massif and served in other GIS-related roles for various governmental organizations in Colombia.

Research: 
Dr. Suárez's research interests lie at the intersection of Geographic Information Science, Cartography, and Geovisualization, with applications in disaster and emergency management research. In her research, she has developed innovative spatial methods that integrate user-generated content, Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), and authoritative geographic data to understand how the general public experiences disaster events at a local scale. Dr. Suárez's current research encompasses the assessment and visualization of the reliability of data contributed by the general public for informed decision-making, as well as the development of novel methods for analyzing and visualizing the multidimensional nature of social vulnerability.
