Bio

Dr. Su Zhang joined the UNM Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in 2017, following his appointment as the Associate Director of the UNM Earth Data Analysis Center (EDAC). As a Geospatial Engineer and Transport Geographer, Zhang specializes in integrating GIScience and geospatial technologies into civil infrastructure and environmental management systems. Given the practical and interdisciplinary scope of Dr. Zhang’s research, he maintains active partnership with government agencies at all levels (federal, state, local, and tribal), as well as with industry and academic collaborators, drawing upon a wide range of funding from governmental and private sources. Dr. Zhang is also committed to training the next generation of geographers in the effective use of geospatial technologies for addressing complex civil infrastructure and environmental challenges.

Research

Dr. Zhang’s research is focused on the spatial dimensions of adopting and utilizing emerging technologies and services for civil infrastructure and environmental management. By leveraging GIS, remote sensing, geovisualization, information technology, and drones, Dr. Zhang develops innovative and resilient solutions to enhance civil infrastructure and environmental systems.
